Sitting in a class of 15/16 year olds, busy working in groups to create a New Person. They create this person and give him/her/it a character and a life, by combining characteristics of each group member. Things each likes about him/herself, is good at, likes doing etc, and then by blowing it up and dramatising it, they create this super being. (Eg Thapello Willy Van der Baloyi that is an Olympic ice-skater, runs an International aid company, poses as a foot-model, has a doctorate in maths and is so good with building connections that he knows more thatn 10 000 people by name and surname). So they sit in groups of 5-6, all huddled around one mannetjie, all learning about each other, sharing, imagining and creating their own feeling of solidarity.
The amasing thing is that this is their firsts year (gr. 10) of bilingual LO lessons (black and white mixed), and here they are, first eye-ing each other, then sort of giving some, and later learning to accommodate, and hopefully even like and maybe one day befriend each other.
But for now they are doing group work...
What we will not do to get kids to take part in each other’s lives:-D
